There is a lot going on in the North Central Region for the college women this year. We've got 3 bids to the championships (at least according to score reporter right now - also doesn't happen a lot) and looking at the results of conference two weeks ago, this could get really exciting. Weekend of Upsets for the Central Region
Iowa State's Women Scorned won their conference and my team UW Eau Claire defeated annual champions the Bella Donna's (Wisconsin) for our own conference win. Did anyone see these wins coming? Not really. But whether it was the elements (wind, rain, etc) or skill, these teams came away as conference champions. What will be the most interesting is how the central regionals will be seeded going in. All of the teams that won didn't perform as well as Wisconsin, Carleton, or Iowa did during the regular season. Iowa State, and UWEC came out to win, and it definitely showed through the scores at the end of the day.
I am so proud of my team SOL. We were a completely different group of ladies this weekend than we were even at Centex (and that was our best tournament yet). Even with the insane windy conditions, we played with patience, offensive skill, and just plain damn good defense. We also kept up our funtensity, which is how SOL succeeds, every time. The first point of the day was about 40 minutes long against Milwaukee's Black Cat. I was chosen to be on this first line and I'll tell you it was a challenge but we came away with the point in the end. If it had gone differently, I feel that our team would have had a completely different day. But SOL fought so hard til the end that we came away with the score. It was the most amazing feeling in the world and we knew at that point that we could win. Our final game of the day was against Madison's Bella Donna. I can't remember the last time they hadn't won this conference tournament. We knew it would be a challenge but we had won all of our games so far and we didn't want to stop this amazing momentum we were in. We went on a 3 point run in the beginning and immediately I thought to myself "Holy shit, we could beat the Bellas today". We fought point to point from that part of the game and worked it to half. After half, it was a battle to finish with a win right up until hard cap. SOL knew that if we kept scoring and held onto it, we could defeat this team. I was on my toes the entire time and had to pee so badly, but I couldn't take myself away from this game. SOL has traditionally been beaten by the Bellas every year at sectionals/conference and for once we knew we could come away with a victory. Hard cap finally went on leaving the final score at 8-7 UWEC over UW. After lining up to shake hands with Madison, we freaked out. Our team had defeated the "undefeatable". It was the best ending to what could have been the most horrible weekend ever. And SOL became conference champions for the first time in our existence.
I'm still thinking about it. Every single thing that was done in that game. Every ridiculously awesome play. Everyone, even our newbs, cheering on the sidelines. Our handles moving that disc so well and working the field like they were vets. Our zone defense was so sick. No one stood a chance against it. And our offense played so well on their toes ready for anything, getting that disc no matter what.
I can't even express how much I love SOL right now. I honestly didn't think we would do that well at sectionals gauging off our earlier performances. During the Bella game I was freaking out because I knew that we could do it. And it was the most amazing feeling when we finally won.
Our team ended the day by going to Culvers for some delicious burgers and ice cream.
I'd like to make a shout out to all my SOLmates out there, past and present. We couldn't have done this without you. We are going to hit the ground running at Regionals. And who knows what could happen this year. With so much strength in the central region, we could get more bids than ever to nationals. That means more chances for our team to get there. And for all we know, SOL could go there for the first ever too. I have full faith in this team after this weekend. I don't have anymore doubts. And yeah, we can keep improving and working on the mistakes we made this weekend. And that will make us so much better, and get us so much closer to victory.
I cannot even begin to explain the potential this team has for the next few years. Our newbs are playing like vets already and its SOO SICK. I can't wait to see SOL playing in the future. I'll be there on the sidelines with my fellow alumni, cheering for this team.

Pre-Conference Musings
In the weeks leading up to conference, my life has been absolutely insane. I'm graduating in May, I still have to do my taxes (yuck), the class that was supposed to count for 30 hours of service learning didn't as of last semester (SURPRISE), and I got a job meaning I had to make arrangements to live here in Eau Claire next year. Phew. So much going on, and on top of that I have to squeeze in two other jobs and ultimate. The good thing is, I'm getting my life in order and I have a full time job to look forward to. Unfortunately ultimate hasn't been at the top of my priorities lately.
To counteract missing practices, I've been throwing with friends and climbing at a ropes course for one of my jobs. It's a blast and a great full body workout too.
This weekend SOL will see all of our fellow Wisconsin teams to compete for bids to regionals. These teams include Wisconsin's Bella Donna, Wisconsin's Atropa, Whitewater Schist, Stevens Point Shockwave, Milwaukee Black Cat, and Marquette's Moxie. My friend Robyn Fennig recruited me to help out with rosters and other tournament things. USAultimate has different formate this year, so she will not be able to be on location (as she has to run conference in Iowa). Hopefully things will run smoothly and turn out to be a good weekend!
I love conference because it gives SOL a chance to see our fellow Wisconsin teams. The Bellas and SOL have been travelling to higher level tournaments in the past few years so we don't get to see all of our friends from back home. A lot of Wisconsin women's teams are still in the building stages. They are doing well and will grow to be better programs some day. The women leading them have a lot of heart, especially those behind Schist and Shockwave. I hope to be more active in building up the women's teams in Wisconsin, but getting done with college is a huge commitment at the moment.
As for the results of this tournament, it would be awesome to see SOL come out on top! Let's do it!

Why I Love This Sport
This last week I spent every single day with SOL. It was an eat, sleep, breathe ultimate situation. We spent our spring break practicing in the morning, laying out at the beach, dancing, and hanging out with our awesome men's team Eauzone. I truly appreciate the places ultimate has taken me. This time, it was the beautiful sunny coast on the Gulf of Mexico. Although it was littered with these creatures, beach time was wonderful. SOL, partly named after the sun, definitely took in as much of its namesake as possible.
The Friday of our spring break week, SOL piled into their respective cars and traveled to Austin, TX for Centex 2011. I could not have anticipated what took place there. Our team met every single one of our goals thanks to new plays learned that previous week and the flow our team finally achieved. Props to the great job done this year by Without Limits and the Texas ultimate crew.
Saturday we woke up and enjoyed the best continental breakfast I've ever seen. We arrived at the parking lot where I got to serenade our team with our favorite song :) Violin is the love of my life (only because I've played since I was 9 and music is basically my life) and incorporating that into ultimate was the best feeling ever. After that we got to our fields to start playing. Our first game was against Pennsylvania's Venus. This game was difficult, no lies. We didn't do too hot or implement many of our new strategies but we did see the potential that SOL could have over the weekend. Venus got away with the game to win 14-4. In our next game against Washington University, we scored the same amount of points. It was another frustration for SOL but we took what we could and learned from our mistakes. WashU is a good team that we also saw at Midwest Throwdown.
After two losses, SOL refocused and decided to bring back our spirit of funtensity. Sometimes SOL forgets the fun part of ultimate and we don't play as well. Something changed in our next two games because we were able to get two well-fought wins. Our third game for the day was against Dartmuth's Princess Layout. This team brought some intensity, but we met and even exceeded it. This game was hard fought but our new zone strategies helped significantly. SOL won this game 12 - 10. We played a game against Connecticut's UCONN that changed the course of our Centex experience. We realized that we could win this game and met that goal. Our mindset was different, we used the new plays we had and found our flow on the field. SOL won the game 13-11. At the end of the day, we broke seed and went into the Centex dance off satisfied and ready to kick some dancing booty.
The Centex dance off this year saw new, more coordinated dances from the competition. We saw fire twirling, backpack girl cameos and some underboob flashing..... SOL was the last team to dance and unfortunately had the lights turn off in the middle due to the automatic timers. However, this did not break our spirit. We found out the next day that we got first place for the second year in a row! As a person who is not coordinated and doesn't have any dance training whatsoever, this is quite the feat. Sunday started off with a game against Texas A&M Stacked. SOL won with a 9-6 score. The next game we played Texas Melee. From the beginning, we could tell this was a better team. After our other Sol counterparts (California Santa Cruz - Sol) it was our turn to take on Melee. After a victory, SOL didn't do as well with Melee. We definitely had some cleanup duty to do in the words of Coach Pat. In our third game, we played Colorado's Kali. With a completely different team than the one at nationals last year, it was cool to see how they would play. SOL realized our mistakes from the Melee game and started changing the game. After winning the first half, we took it to a final score of 10-6 and won! Our final game of the weekend was against Dartmuth's Princess Layout for the DII 5th place spot. This game went differently than on Saturday. Dartmuth won the game 13-7. Sol did not regret the loss though because we ended up breaking seed by ten spots and played the best ultimate as a team since the beginning of the season. Dartmuth even cheered us up by asking for an encore of our first place dance!
Something I got really excited about was meeting the other Sol team at Centex!! One of the team members approached us asking "Hey, so what's the practice plan?" jokingly and I immediately started up a conversation with her. She asked what it was like in northern Wisconsin so I told her about our chilly conditions and in return I asked about Santa Cruz. It made me really happy to meet another team with the same name and find out how cool they were. They even bought some of our awesome purple hats (which, if you are interested in one, just contact me through my email).
Overall, this past week embodied why I love this sport so much. SOL performed well, won a dance contest, survived living together for a week and found out that through hard work we can achieve the goals we set at the beginning of the season.
Especially after this weekend, I see SOL going really far in the next few years.....

My Midwest Throwdown Experience
Despite the windy, wet, and muddy conditions, this tournament started out considerably better than last season. When compared to Chicago Invite 2010 and Philly Classic 2010, MWTD was Florida and the others were Alaska. We came out ready and pumped up to play some outdoor ultimate.
On Saturday, SOL was placed in Pool B so we got to see Iowa's Saucy Nancy, Northwestern's GungHo, and St. Louis' SLU.
GungHo was our first game. It took a while for our team to get into the swing of things, but once we did, we adjusted to the wind and got some really good plays in there. GungHo is a decent team. They had a good fast game with their movement between handlers and cutters. A lot of zone was played which was predictable for the weather conditions. It gave our team a chance to apply the zone strategies we've been practicing. Our newer players got to see how useful zone can be outdoors (our indoor practices don't give that realistic look as there is no wind).
For our second game, we got to play against our friend Robyn Fennig and Saucy Nancy. This team has significantly improved since last year and is definitely a contender for a central regionals victory. There were times when you could tell they are still learning, but their victory said it all. SOL played well during this game. We had some sick plays against the force that is Robyn and our team got to see another view of a team we'll play at regionals.
Our third and final game was against SLU. SOL saw it's first victory against them. These ladies put up a good fight and some of the game was call and answer as upwind and downwind advantages were exchanged. Despite our wet frozen feet SOL played a good game and won. It was a good finish to our day followed up by a delicious meal at an authentic Mexican restaurant and a visit to the St. Louis Arch.
Day 2:
The sun came out for SOL on Sunday. Teams we got to see were Ohio State's Fever, Iowa's Luther College, and the Kansas Bettys. During our games against Ohio State and Luther, we had some really good standout plays from newbies and vets alike. Our team was in much higher spirits and started playing with more funtensity than we had in a while! We saw the difference when playing just intense than when enjoying the game and playing intense. Our team's flow started coming together a lot more and we finished both games with a score, leaving us happy and satisfied with our playing. Our last game of the day was against our lovely Betty friends. We took advantage of our improvements and applied them throughout this game. SOL was also able to apply much of our new drills and techniques we've learned in practice this winter.
All in all, it was a great weekend. Our team will continue to get better and grow throughout this spring. The scores don't show it but play-wise, we WILL bring it as the season moves along. By regionals, our goal is to utilize everything we learn at MWTD, Easterns, and Centex to bring it for a chance to see nationals. Our team may be newer but anything can happen this season and everyone on SOL fully believes that.
Personally I enjoyed this tournament a lot. I was super pumped to get out there and play. My personal development has improved significantly and I can't wait to continue developing. My field vision and defense is there, I just need to play smarter and see the bigger picture of things. I also need to keep myself positive and not let silly things get in the way of my love for playing the game of ultimate.

11 Days
In exactly 11 days, I get to finally run out on a grassy field and play an outdoor ultimate tournament! I can't wait for my college team's spring outdoor season to kick off. Mother nature needs to melt all this snow so I don't have to get up at 6am for practice. During my time indoors, I developed a few goals for myself.
Play more aggressive. Because I'm a scrawny kid, I feel more intimidated when presented with those high discs or layout D's. It always looks like I'll brake something. After talking to players who are aggressive, I've gotten some pointers and tried them out when I could indoors (i.e. on turf). So far my survival rate is very high.
Consistency, consistency, consistency. This was my advice from my SOL captains.
Stay optimistic. I tend to be very critical of myself during intense games. My goal here is to keep my chin up and remember if I miss that one disc, then I should just go and get 5 D's to make up for it. I can't let it ruin the rest of my game.
In other news, I got my new SOL jerseys!! Still waiting on the sublimated jersey though, which will look SO sick. I played in a mini tournament this past weekend. Although 3x3 ultimate is VERY frustrating, especially on such a small court, it helped me with my quick game. One of our SOL newbies came along to play and she was on the first place team!! The prize was a shotglass, so we had to tease her since she is a freshman. It made me smile to see a newb playing outside of the SOL environment. She did so well. This is why I encourage others to pickup with other teams. I've learned so much about myself that way. Also, with a college team, there are different pressures over your head. My favorite team to play with is the Madtown Boozehounds. They play well and have a blast at the same time! Plus, Pete Schramm is a legend in the making, haha. Who doesn't want to play on a team that passes around a boot full of delicious beer with the opposing team after each game?

The prize was a shotglass, so we had to tease her since she is a freshman. It made me smile to see a newb playing outside of the SOL environment. She did so well. This is why I encourage others to pickup with other teams. I've learned so much about myself that way. Also, with a college team, there are different pressures over your head. My favorite team to play with is the Madtown Boozehounds. They play well and have a blast at the same time! Plus, Pete Schramm is a legend in the making, haha. Who doesn't want to play on a team that passes around a boot full of delicious beer with the opposing team after each game?
